Superman and Lois boss reveals hopes for Smallville cameos

Superman & Lois producer Todd Helbing has revealed his enthusiasm for Smallville actors to make cameos on his DC show, including one popular star, Michael Rosenbaum.

Speaking to Looper, Helbing was excited by the idea of seeing Rosenbaum appear on the show as a baddie, saying: "You know what, that's a good point [that Rosenbaum should play a villain on the show.] He is fantastic. He was such an awesome Lex."

It can't be understated how popular the actor's young Lex Luthor was in the Superman prequel series. He appeared on 156 episodes and was the fourth highest recurring character during its 10 seasons.

Meanwhile, Smallville stars Tom Welling and Erica Durance (who played Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively) briefly returned for The Flash four-part episode crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Helbing was asked about what it was like to see them again.

"I had left The Flash during that part of Crisis," revealed the producer, who was also a writer on the Grant Gustin DC show.

He added: "I was not fortunate enough to meet anybody. I love what they did with Tom Welling and Erica, that they were married, and that farm is so iconic. I would love to see either of those two on our show.

"I'm not sure how we would fit them in yet, but that would be a lot of fun."

Even though it began life as a spin-off of Melissa Benoist's Supergirl, Superman & Lois went in its own grounded direction. It followed Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as they try navigating married life in Smallville with their two sons, Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan Kent (Alex Garfin).

The show became a massive hit when it debuted in the US in February 2021 and was handed a second series renewal a month later and season three on the way.

The second season flies back on the BBC on July 16 with a double bill from 5:25pm with both seasons will then be available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.

Superman & Lois airs on The CW in the US, and BBC One in the UK. All episodes of season one are now available on BBC iPlayer.
