Supernatural spin-off The Winchesters is premiering tomorrow (October 11), but it's not too late in the day for more casting news. In this case, it's Smallville's Tom Welling.
As reported by Deadline, the former Superman actor has been cast in a recurring role as Samuel Campbell, who was played by Mitch Pileggi in the original series.
A veteran hunter who's head of the Campbell dynasty, Samuel believes that he always knows the best way to get things done – and doesn't like to be told otherwise. He's trained his daughter Mary in everything she knows, but their relationship is hugely strained.

When Samuel appears in episode 7 and beyond to lend a hand to Mary and her friends to save the world, it might turn out that getting over their differences might be more difficult than beating any baddies.
The Winchesters showrunner Robbie Thompson said: "When we were discussing casting the iconic character of Samuel Campbell, everyone felt it had to be someone who could step into the role and provide instant gravitas and history.
"Jensen and Danneel [Ackles] brought up the idea of Tom Welling, and the second his name was mentioned we all knew he was the perfect person for the part. Tom is a fantastic actor and wonderful human, and we are so excited to be welcoming him to The Winchesters and the Supernatural family."

Dean Winchester actor Jensen Ackles was one of the people who came up with the idea of the spin-off, and serves as executive producer (and narrator). According to lead stars Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly, he was very hands-on.
"He was on set every single day of the pilot, just like being super collaborative, giving us notes, telling us about the universe that we might not know about. So it was really good insight," Donnelly said.
The Winchesters premieres on October 11 in the US, airing on The CW. It doesn't have a UK broadcaster yet.
