Former Doctor Who star Reggie Yates has unveiled the first look at his throwback comedy film Pirates.

Yates flashes back to New Year's Eve 1999 as three 18-year-old friends try to break into the world of pirate radio by blasting their playlists through London in a truly DIY fashion.

The trio are portrayed by Small Axe actor Elliot Edusah, Gangs of London's Jordan Peters and EastEnders' Reda Elazouar (as Cappo, Two Tonne and Kidda respectively) on a wild night before their lives change forever.

In Pirates, the lads decide to blast their pirate radio tunes through the open windows of their crammed Peugeot, while trying to pick up girls and arguing over which one of them has the best fashion.

Yates has loaded up the soundtrack with some absolute bangers from the late '90s and early '00s from the likes of So Solid Crew, Ms Dynamite, Sunship, Sia, Wookie, DJ Zinc, Scott Garcia, Hardrive, Peven Everett and DJ Luck & MC Neat.

The end result is an infectious blend of garage music, Moschino fashion, late '90s vibes and a buddy comedy sensibility that's going to give you a pretty wicked night at the cinema.

Yates – who is best known as a TV presenter and radio DJ, but has also played Martha's brother Leo Jones in Doctor Who and voiced CBeebies character Rastamouse – has been developing his writing and directing CV over the last decade.

On the way to taking both jobs on Pirates, he created the acclaimed one-off BBC Three film Make Me Famous, starring Grantchester's Tom Brittney as an ex-reality star driven to desperate lengths to erase his notorious public image.

Pirates doesn't have an official release date yet, but it's coming soon.
