The New Mutants is FINALLY coming out! It survived multiple delays, a change in movie studios and a global pandemic to release to a fanfare of... some pretty scathing reviews.

Critics who have seen the film (Disney didn't provide socially distanced screenings or online viewings) criticised the horror spin-off for a lack of originality and imagination.

Maisie Williams, who plays Wolfsbane in the movie, tweeted out Forbes' review of the film, a review that used the phrase "nothing-burger", and decided to take the mick (out of the film and review).

More criticism came from the New Mutants' co-creator Bob McLeod, who accused the film of "white-washing" the character Roberto da Costa, and stated that they misspelled his surname in the credits, something that "will be on the movie forever" (although it could be edited for streaming, that's not a good look).

Director Josh Boone recently explained why a streaming-first release wasn't possible for The New Mutants, saying that a contractual agreement means it needs to be released theatrically.

"With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place," he said. "We just, too, would like people to see it in the theatre. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it's safe to go back."

The New Mutants is out now in the US and on September 4 in the UK.
