X-Men: The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy takes centre stage in the first teaser trailer for upcoming Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit.
Based on the novel by Walter Tevis, the new Netflix show tells the story of Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy), who discovers a talent for chess while developing an addiction to tranquilizers after she's abandoned and entrusted to a Kentucky orphanage in the late 1950s.
As Beth is haunted by her personal demons and fuelled by a cocktail of drugs and obsession, she transforms into a skilled and glamorous outcast who's determined to conquer the boundaries of the male-dominated world of competitive chess.

Netflix's first teaser for the show came in the form of a date announcement video, confirming that The Queen's Gambit will premiere on the streaming service on October 23.
And it also gave us a first look at the film's impressive cast too, as the series also features performances from Marielle Heller, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Moses Ingram, Bill Camp and Harry Melling – aka Harry Potter's Dudley Dursley.

The series is directed and co-written by two-time Academy Award nominee Scott Frank, who also executive produces alongside William Horberg and series co-creator Allan Scott.
Meanwhile, Taylor-Joy's long-awaited X-Men movie The New Mutants will finally premiere on Friday in the US after years of delays and release date changes, including most recently due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The movie is getting a theatrical release – and so won't be going straight to streaming – but a lack of advanced screeners for critics has meant that with just one day to go until release, there's only one official critic's review for the film so far.

The New Mutants stars Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton as a group of young mutants who are beginning to discover their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will.
The Queen's Gambit will premiere on Netflix on October 23. The New Mutants is due for release on August 28 in the US and on September 4 in the UK.
