The New Mutants star Maisie Williams has praised the X-Men spin off's "important" same-sex relationship.

During the long-awaited film's Comic-Con@Home panel, which was shown on Thursday (July 23), the Game of Thrones actor said she's "glad that the fans are so excited" to see her character Rahne Sinclair – who possesses the ability to transform into a wolf – fall in love with Blu Hunt's Danielle Moonstar.

"From the first audition that we did together, we got on so well and it was really wonderful to be able to see a relationship like this in a typically quite, like, masculine world of superheroes," she told moderator Ira Madison III.

"It was just lovely to see these two fragile women who protect one another and bring light out in each other. I think it's really important to see relationships like this and it was an absolute joy to work with Blu."

Elsewhere during the virtual chat, director Josh Boone revealed that they plan on including Williams and Hunt's initial screen test on the movie's eventual home entertainment release, so fans of the film can see how well they matched from the very beginning.

"We looked high and low for Blu, and finding her was such an incredible thing," he explained. "We all know we couldn't have made the film without her.

"She was the perfect person for the part," he explained, before joking: "They had the kiss in the audition, so it was not COVID times."

Also starring Teen Wolf's Henry Zaga, Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton and Split's Anya Taylor-Joy, The New Mutants follows a group of youngsters with extraordinary powers who band together to escape the mysterious medical facility they're being held at against their will.

The New Mutants is still set for release on August 28.
