The New Mutants hasn't exactly had the smoothest of rides ahead of its release next month, but work on its sequel (and maybe even its threequel) had already been ongoing behind the scenes.
After a series of setbacks and delays, but no reshoots, The New Mutants is set to be released in just a few weeks, and now director Josh Boone has revealed what might happen in a sequel if it ever sees the light of day.
Calling his original plans for the New Mutants series a trilogy of "unique" horror movies, Boone told Entertainment Weekly that he had even intended to introduce the villain of New Mutants' sequel at the end of the first film.
"We had always planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next movie," he explained. "We even had an actor cast, but because of the merger and because Marvel owns X-Men now and is going to do their own thing, there was no reason to go shoot it."

It's believed that Antonio Banderas would have been that villain, with reports suggesting he was in talks to play Emmanuel de Costa, the father of Roberto/Sunspot (Henry Zaga).

The plot would have seen Roberto travel to Brazil with the rest of the New Mutants to reunite with his estranged mother, who his father is trying to kill. "We always intended to do New Mutants: Brazil as the second movie," Boone revealed.

As well as the introduction of Emmanuel de Costa, New Mutants: Brazil would have also featured the arrival of two other comic book characters, Warlock and Karma.
"Karma was always going to be the villain in the second movie that would be absorbed into the group by the end," he continued. "We had always wanted to bring Karma and Warlock into the second one when we couldn't do it in the first one."
Regardless of how The New Mutants does at the box office, it looks like this new era of X-Men will never make it to the big screen now.
The New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 3.
