Horror-tinged X-Men spin-off The New Mutants will feature a "beautiful love story" between Maisie Williams and Blu Hunt's characters.

The movie finally gets its theatrical release next month after a tumultuous road through post-production, and in conversation with Entertainment Weekly, director Josh Boone and actress Williams shared some unreleased details.

"It's sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film," explained Boone of the relationship, which will see Rahne Sinclair and Danielle Moonstar grow feelings for each other.

Maisie labelled it "a real extension of what is touched on in the comics."

"Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality. If they really could understand each other on that level, then you'd probably end up falling in love with that person," she added.

However, the Game of Thrones favourite also confirmed that this storyline won't overshadow the rest of the movie, leaving plenty of time for super-heroics.

"It's not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality. It's not centred around that and they don't really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it."

The New Mutants is scheduled for release on April 3, 2020.
