The New Mutants director Josh Boone has revealed that there's a key reason why his new X-Men film won't be featuring a key location.

The movie stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga as the titular mutants, who are just discovering their abilities as they fight to escape the secret facility they're being held in.

However, because they're being held in that secret facility, fans shouldn't expect to see a visit to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters – a location that's become an X-Men film staple over the years.

And according to Boone, there's a simple enough reason for that: it's because the New Mutants are "too dangerous", even for Xavier's.

"They're very much in a place that's like a psych hold for mutants who are too dangerous to be at the mansion," Boone explained to ScreenRant.

"You know. I'd tell you more, but there's twists and turns and all that. But yeah, there's a doctor there who helps them and they do that stuff. Like I said, a little Girl, Interrupted and Cuckoo's Nest and a horror movie."

Despite the lack of a key location, the director has previously assured fans that New Mutants is "absolutely an X-Men movie" – albeit, with some differences.

"There's references and things that happen that are part of the greater whole, but we very much wanted it to tonally and aesthetically stand on its own," Boone told Digital Spy and other press during a set visit in 2017.

"It's very grounded and very credible and because we shot it in a real location, it just will never look like a typical comic book movie where there's a lot of green screen, and everything sort of looks like there's a painted sheen of CGI across it."

Meanwhile, the film's producer Karen Rosenfelt has also shed some light on the film's setting, calling it "contemporary timeless".

"We don't define where we are, but it is today. It's contemporary. It's not way in the future and it's not in the past," she explained.

The New Mutants is released in the US on April 3 and in the UK on April 8.
