Director Josh Boone has rubbished the idea that The New Mutants was ever eyed as an R-rated release.

His (substantially delayed) superhero horror movie from the X-Men universe will finally crash land in cinemas this spring, but according to Boone, the fresh-faced mutants including Maisie Williams' Wolfsbane and Charlie Heaton's Cannonball, won't be entering Deadpool territory anytime soon.

Responding to one fan's message on a recent Instagram post, Boone wrote: "The movie has always been and will always be PG-13. There was never a plan for an R-rated movie."

So despite the trailer's moments of terror and undeniable creepy tone, it looks like The New Mutants will keep in line with the X-Men big screen blueprint of PG-13.

Meanwhile, the filmmaker has previously confirmed that The New Mutants will be released in its original form, even though the project was rumoured for lengthy reshoots.

With the Disney-Fox merger finally signed off last year, the studio heads are obviously happy enough with Boone's initial vision.

Roll on the mutant carnage.

The New Mutants is released in the US on April 3 and in the UK on April 8.
