The project is progressing and is already in a playable state, according to a tweet from Aaron Flynn of BioWare.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the next Mass Effect game will borrow core game systems from Dragon Age: Inquisition.
The project is said to support co-operative multiplayer, and it's being developed using the Frostbite 3 engine.
Mass Effect 3 is the series' latest release, and it originally launched in March 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
