Update: One day after unveiling the live-action Star Wars as The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm has given fans their first look at the mysterious lead character.

The studio still hasn't confirmed the name of this "lone gunfighter", but there are some huge names coming aboard to direct episodes: Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

Original: There's still no sign of Boba Fett's long-awaited Star Wars solo movie ever happening, but his legacy will be a central focus of the franchise's upcoming live-action TV series.

Series creator Jon Favreau has confirmed after nearly a year of secrecy that the upcoming show for Disney's streaming service will be called The Mandalorian, named after Fett's race from the planet Mandalore.

The series doesn't appear to be centrally focused on Boba Fett, though — a plot description from Favreau sets it firmly in the three decades between Return of the Jedi and 2015's The Force Awakens.

What to Read Next

His synopsis reads: "After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic."

The Mandalorians were first developed by George Lucas as a fleet of super-soldiers, before Boba Fett was introduced in an animated short during 1978's Star Wars Holiday Special and later in live-action in The Empire Strikes Back.

It was reported back in August that Disney was already prepared to spend as much as $100 million (£77 million) on The Mandalorian, making it one of the most expensive TV shows of all-time if it hits that mark.

Disney is set to launch its streaming service next year, but there's no confirmed premiere date for The Mandalorian just yet.
