The rumours of another Prison Break revival aren't just rumours any longer.

Ever since Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) reunited on-screen earlier this year, fans have been hoping that the fifth season wouldn't be the last.

There was fresh hope last month when Dominic Purcell tipped new episodes on his Instagram, and now there's official word from US channel Fox that early work on a sixth season is underway.

"We are developing a new iteration of Prison Break," Fox boss Michael Thorn told reporters at the TCA press tour on Thursday (January 4).

The network executive then teased: "It's in very early stages of development, but we're really excited about it."

While his use of the phrase "new iteration" might bring to mind the failed 24: Legacy reboot for some fans, keep in mind that Dominic Purcell definitely does seem to be involved in the next phase of Prison Break.

Wentworth Miller would seemingly be available as well, since he's recently announced that he'll stop playing Captain Cold in The CW's DC TV universe later in the year.

Miller previously disclosed that he'd pitched an outrageous idea for a sixth season of Prison Break, in which Michael and Lincoln would be forced to revisit all of their breakouts from years past.

Whether or not this barmy premise comes to fruition, co-showrunner Vaun Wilmott confirmed as early as this past spring that ideas for more Prison Break were "percolating" in the writers' minds.

"Right now, we are all just enjoying these nine episodes," Wilmott said in May. "If the right storyline comes along, I am sure the gang would be back to do it again."
