The most exciting thing we've heard so far about the Will & Grace revival is that it's going to completely undo the heartbreaking series finale from back in 2006.

When the show originally ended, Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) had drifted apart as friends and were living separate lives — Will with baby Ben and Grace with her partner Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) and their daughter Lila.

Although a time jump later revealed that Will and Grace reunited as BFFs in their old age, the very idea of a decades-long separation in that finale proved just too difficult to work into the revival.

So, as Entertainment Weekly reports, Will and Grace are both single, childless and living together in their same Manhattan apartment when the sitcom picks up on NBC this autumn.

"When the decision was made to bring the series back, we were like, well, we left them with kids, right?" co-creator David Kohan recalled. "And if they have children, then it has to be about them being parents, 'cause presumably it would be a priority in their lives.

"And if it wasn't a priority in their lives, then they're still parents, they're just bad parents, right? We frankly did not want to see them being either good parents or bad parents. We wanted them to be Will and Grace."

What to Read Next

These new episodes won't completely sweep the past under the rug because Harry Connick Jr will have a brief cameo as Grace's one-time love Leo at some point during the season.

However, while time has moved on, our favourite characters will be instantly recognisable for long-time fans of the Emmy-winning comedy.

Will is still a high-powered corporate lawyer, while Grace's interior design business is booming like never before. A decade on, Jack (Sean Hayes) will be hawking a creative process he calls Jackting while Karen (Megan Mullally)... is basically just boozing a lot, as usual.

"They've done well with their lives," co-creator Max Mutchnick teased. "They've always been successful at life and living. It's relationships that Will and Grace have always had the trouble with, and they still do."

The cast celebrated their revival this week by releasing the first batch of on-set photos from the 12-episode miniseries — click here to take a look.

Will & Grace returns on Thursday, September 28 at 9pm on NBC in the US. Watch a teaser below:
