Kong: Skull Island may be getting a "female-focussed" TV spin-off.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the ubiquitous monster will feature in a new television drama series which will have a female lead as well as a multicultural ensemble.

The series comes to screens courtesy of MarVista Entertainment and IM Global but is yet to be picked up by a television network.

It will be an extension on the Skull Island movie, which starred Oscar winner Brie Larson.

"There's clearly a deep and abiding interest in this timeless story," said IM Global Television president Mark Stern.

"We look forward to [bringing] this gripping tale of survival and adventure to life for a new generation of Kong fans."

The script will be written by Oscar nominees Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title (The Bye Bye Man) who will also exec produce, alongside Dannie Festa (Trolls).

"It is with great anticipation that we partner with IM Global Television to bring this exciting new vision directly into viewers' homes," said MarVista CEO Fernando Szew.

"We feel confident that it will be hugely appealing to fans all over the world," added Festa.

Kong: Skull Island is about a team of scientists who explore an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong, and must fight to escape a primal Eden.

Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts told Digital Spy last month that it nearly had a very different post-credits sequence featuring a familiar face.
