The presiding judge has sentenced The Good Wife's spinoff to a second season.

In this case, the "presiding judge" is US streaming service CBS All Access and the exact show in question is The Good Fight.

An early renewal for the Christine Baranski-led Good Wife companion series was announced on Wednesday (March 15), only five episodes into the legal drama's first season.

"We're only a few episodes into the first season and the reaction from CBS All Access subscribers and critics alike has been phenomenal," CBS interactive president Marc DeBevoise announced.

"This series and its characters are just beginning and we can't wait to see where Robert and Michelle King, their creative team and the amazing cast take The Good Fight next."

Picking up a year after the end of Emmy-winning critical darling The Good Wife, high-priced lawyer Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) is herself in a pinch after losing most of her savings in a financial scam.

Diane was never one to let a bad break keep her down, so it's not long before she signs up with a one-time rival's firm and is back in the courtroom.

Along with Baranski, The Good Wife's Cush Jumbo also joined the spinoff as promising young legal mind Lucca Quinn.

Newcomers included Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie as Diane's goddaughter, and Justified's Erica Tazel as a powerful partner at the Reddick, Boseman, & Kolstad law firm.

The Good Fight continues on Sunday (March 19) on CBS All Access in the US. More4 will be bringing the series to UK screens this spring.
