Girls star Peter Scolari has replaced Peter MacNicol in the Outstanding Guest Actor Emmy race after the latter's nomination was rescinded this week.

The actor, who plays Hannah Horvath's (Lena Dunham) father Tad in the HBO show, has now given the show its only Emmy nod this year.

MacNicol's original nod for Veep was dropped after it was discovered he had appeared in more than 50% of series five's episodes, over the limit to be eligible for the category.

He was found to have been in 10 seconds of a fifth episode in the 10-episode series, though the show was still in production around the Emmys deadline.

HBO said that "the late-airing episodes of Veep and, therefore, their credits, did not yet exist" at the time.

The TV Academy added: "This decision is in no way a diminishment of Mr MacNicol's stellar performance on this season of Veep."

Scolari now joins Tracy Morgan and Larry David (Saturday Night Live), Bob Newhart (The Big Bang Theory), Bradley Whitford (Transparent) and Martin Mull (Veep) in the category.
