Girls star Allison Williams has signed on to join American Horror Story's Matt Bomer in his new TV show Fellow Travelers.

Bomer will both star in and executive produce the eight-parter for Showtime, which has been created by Homeland executive producer Ron Nyswaner.

Based on the 2007 Thomas Mallon novel of the same name, Fellow Travelers is described as "a love story and political thriller, chronicling the volatile romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington".

Bomer is due to play the charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who has a successful behind-the-scenes political career and avoids emotional entanglements at all costs.

One day he meets Tim Laughlin, "a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith", and the pair begin a romance, just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare a war on "subversives and sexual deviants".

Their paths then cross continuously across four decades, as they try to navigate the obstacles that the world puts in their way.

Variety reports that Williams will play Lucy Smith, the daughter of a prominent US Senator, who has known Bomer's character since they were teenagers.

The series was first announced last September before being picked up by Showtime in April, and is scheduled to go into production in Toronto this July.

Back in April, Jana Winograde, President of Entertainment at Showtime Networks, said of the series: "As a thrilling and deeply moving exploration of character and American life in the latter half of the past century, Fellow Travelers shines an unprecedented light on stories that are as urgent today as ever.

"The series delivers us directly into an insider world of Washington rife with national consequences, while drawing out the intimate moments that are profoundly personal and often heartbreaking."

American Horror Story airs on FX in the US and Disney+ in the UK. Catch up on series 1-8 on Netflix, with seasons 1-9 available to buy on Amazon Prime Video.
