By John Noble will join Elementary as a series regular.
The Fringe star has signed up to play Sherlock Holmes's (Jonny Lee Miller) wealthy and estranged father in the show's upcoming fourth season.
The character will turn up in New York City to deal with the aftermath of his son's recent relapse.
"We could not be more delighted to have John Noble taking on such an important role," said series creator Robert Doherty.
"We've enjoyed his work for many years now - especially his tremendous run on Fringe - and cannot wait to see him opposite Jonny and Lucy [Liu]. It's going to be an exciting season."
Noble recently appeared in Sleepy Hollow, and guest starred in the finale of Forever.
Elementary airs on CBS in the US and on Sky Living in the UK.
