The upcoming X-Files reunion felt a little more real last night when David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson sang a duet together.

The pair played a cover of Neil Young's 'Helpless' during a show at The Cutting Room in New York City, hugging and kissing at the end of their performance in the ultimate piece of fan service.

Duchovny was playing the concert in support of his debut album Hell Or Highwater, which is released this week.

Anderson joined the band for their encore and quipped: "Can we play some real music, please?"

Duchovny asked: "Is there anything you're in the mood for, perhaps?"

Another guest performer on the evening was Madeleine Martin, who played Duchovny's daughter in the Californication. She sung on the title track of Duchovny's new album.

It was confirmed in March that The X-Files would return for a six-episode event series, with production to begin this summer.

Fox announced yesterday that the show will debut on the network on Sunday, January 24, before continuing in the Monday 8pm time slot.

Duchovny, Anderson and Mitch Pileggi are all confirmed to be returning to the paranormal series as their FBI agent characters.

Glen Morgan and James Wong, writers of classic episodes such as 'Squeeze' and 'Little Green Men', will join Carter and Darin Morgan to create the new season.
