Star Trek: Discovery's first teaser trailer for season 5 has dropped, revealing new cast members including The Umbrella Academy star Callum Keith Rennie.
Rennie, who appeared in the third season of Netflix’s superhero show as Lester Pocket, will play Rayner on Discovery, described as a "gruff, smart Starfleet Captain who holds a clear line between commander and crew" (via TV Line).
As per the official character description, Rayner "doesn’t do niceties", with his mantra being "get the job done and apologise later".

Rennie’s casting, as well as the release of the teaser trailer, was part of the Star Trek panel for New York Comic-Con, which also saw them drop a trailer for the third and final season of Picard.
In addition to Rennie, showrunner Alex Kurtzman announced that Eve Harlow (Agents of SHIELD) and Elias Toufexis (New Amsterdam) would also join the cast as series regulars.
Harlow will play Moll, a courier-turned-outlaw who "goes into every situation with a clear plan", whilst Toufexis will play Moll’s "impulsive and fiercely protective" partner L’ak.

The logline for the fifth season, which is due to premiere in 2023, reads: "Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.
"But there are others on the hunt as well, dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."
Recently, star Sara Mitich spoke with Digital Spy about her character switch on the show, saying she loved roles where she can "physically change and transform" herself.
Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1-4 are available on Paramount+ now. Season 5 is due to premiere in 2023.
