Agents of SHIELD star Gabriel Luna has lifted the lid on the Ghost Rider spin-off's unsuccessful journey to the screen.

It was all going so swimmingly in the spring of 2019, with streaming service Hulu officially developing the supernatural biker Johnny Blaze's very own show, but then Marvel Studios absorbed Marvel Television.

Luna, who would've reprised the character, recently caught up with Comic Book to set the record straight on what went down.

"A year goes by [after his work on SHIELD came to a close] and we were still trying to find the right showrunner and meanwhile they're picking up my hold [clause, which kept Marvel at the top of his list] again, so every six months, they would give me my fee to keep them in first position," he explained.

"I just really loved that character. I really loved the people I was working with, so I elected to grant them that, always with the promise that we'd get there. We'd get this show across the finish line.

Marvel Television's Jeph Loeb was then suddenly replaced by Marvel Studios top dog Kevin Feige, who was given the responsibility of overseeing TV production in its entirety – cancelling or putting everything on hold in the end.

"It was really disappointing just in the end. I remember at the time I tried to have some perspective on it and you can't look back," Luna added.

"You've got to just keep on plugging forward."
