Greenleaf spoilers follow.
The Oprah Winfrey Network's megachurch drama Greenleaf follows the Greenleaf family and their Memphis congregation as they face various dramatic challenges.
In the fourth series, the Greenleafs team up against the threat of losing Calvary to Bob Whitmore (Beau Bridges) and Harmony & Hope Ministries.
But with family secrets threatening to bubble up, they have to contend with each other, too. It's made for a compelling season arc.
"Bob wants to fold Calvary into Harmony & Hope," new season regular Bridges said of season four (via Shadow and Act).
"His vision is to have all people worship together. Black, white, whatever, and to worship in respect and freedom together. Bob believes that vision can’t succeed unless we have a strong Black leader in the pulpit so he appeals to Mae to be that person."
What to Read Next
As well as airing on Winfrey's network, you an also catch all four seasons on Netflix – and it's good news, ladies and gents, because season five has officially been greenlit.
Here's everything you need to know.
Greenleaf season 5 air date: When will it be on?
Season five will arrive in June 2020, according to The Chicago Crusader.
Merle Dandrige, who plays Grace, shared the following tweet: "I'll continue Grace's prayer of gratitude with my own. I'm so grateful to everyone who holds space with us to have the tough conversations, to mend our societal rifts. Thank YOU for watching, thank you cast, crew, writers, producers and, of course, @oprah. C u in 2020! #Greenleaf."
Greenleaf season 5 cast: Who's in it?
Keith David and Lynn Whitfield will return as Bishop James and Lady Mae, because they're the stars. They'll be joined by Deborah Joy Winans, Oprah Winfrey, LeToya Luckett, Lamman Rucker and Kim Hawthorne.
When the show premiered back in 2016, Winfrey herself revealed her personal connection to certain strands of the Greenleaf narrative.
"The whole scene where Kerissa is attacking Grace at the table about, 'Are you spiritual, or religious?' I had that. I've also had that moment where Grace is saying out loud, 'I swear to God,'" she said (via Variety).
"I was a little girl once and I said that. And my father said, 'Not in my house you won't.'"
She added: "One of the writers in the room actually is an 'every-Sunday-morning-church-going-person'…so it's pretty authentic."
Last season, Rick Fox (Darius Nash), soul legend Patti LaBelle (Maxine Patterson) and Homeland's Beau Bridges were all promoted to series regulars – so we'd expect them to return too, unless it turns into a Game Of Thrones style bloodbath and ends in a Red Wedding (Red Sermon?).
Spoiler: it won't.
Greenleaf season 5 plot: What will it be about?
This is the official synopsis for the upcoming chapter (via The Chicago Crusader): "In Season Five, The Greenleafs attempt to maintain a united front in the face of losing their church to Bob Whitmore and Harmony and Hope Ministries, but secrets past and present create what could be fatal fractures in the family's fragile foundation."
