Teenage sleuth Nancy Drew recently returned to TV screens and, similarly to fellow The CW show Riverdale, this one is darker, edgier and sexier.

Another thing this reboot has added is a supernatural element, something the more down-to-earth original didn't have.

Explaining why that is to Digital Spy and other outlets, executive producers Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau said: "In our world, we'll have ghosts and each of them we encounter along the way is something that is grounded in the living.

"So, ghosts come back to haunt us because of crimes or murder or whatever it is that Nancy Drew has to solve.

"The ghosts have their own mythology, you know, very specific how they operate in the world, why they are here, who they are haunting, their relationship to each other. That'll play out in arcs."

Speaking about this new version being more sexed-up, fans were divided on the changes to the character.

Actress Kennedy McMann previously explained why the change was made, stating that Nancy has unravelled due to trauma.

"I think because of this unravelling she's willing to try anything and desperately work to fill this void that she's experiencing, and this extreme loneliness," she said.

Nancy Drew airs on Wednesdays on The CW in the US.
