This article also contains major spoilers for 13 Reasons Why season 3.

13 Reasons Why's latest season left us with many unanswered questions, as well as plenty of possible plot threads that can still be explored in season 4.

Whether we'd be getting more from the Netflix show post-season 3 was never really called into question, with news of its fourth and final season getting confirmed before the most recent 13 episodes even dropped.

But what can we expect from 13 Reasons Why season 4?

Will Winston uncover the truth about the gang's cover-up?

In the final episode, we saw Monty and Winston sleeping together which, unbeknownst to Winston at the time, created an alibi for Monty as it happened on the same night that Bryce was killed.

What to Read Next

Of course, Monty (who was later arrested for his past assault against Tyler) was himself found dead in his cell by the end of season 3.

This made new girl Ani's plan to pin Bryce's murder on him even easier, and it seemed like Deputy Standall was convinced enough to go along with that version of events.

It's worth pointing out that, as it was his own son Alex Standall that had in fact murdered Bryce, the police officer had a personal motive to put Monty in the frame too. In fact, we later saw him destroying evidence that, presumably, could have implicated his son.

In the final scenes, Winston confronted Ani about what she and her friends had done. It seems quite likely that this storyline will continue into the next season.

Winston could use his own knowledge to try and uncover the truth. He doesn't know the identity of Bryce's killer, as far as we know, only that Monty couldn't have done it because they were together.

Will it all unravel for Ani, Clay, Alex, Jessica, Zach (who beat Bryce to a pulp right before he was killed) and the others? Or will they manage to silence Winston?

Will Bryce Walker return for season 4?

13 Reasons Why
Netflix

Bryce is dead. But this is 13 Reasons Why, so that doesn't actually rule him out of the next season. It goes without saying that the high school jock was one of the more horrendous characters on the show.

Even with season 3's problematic attempts to redeem him in some way, it seems to us that his arc has played out. Actor Justin Prentice even admitted that it felt like they "have put a nice bow on Bryce", during an interview with Hollywood Reporter.

"Artistically as an actor, we played with the villain-esque side of him early on in the first couple of seasons and in season 3 we get to dive deeper and make him more human," he continued.

"I feel like we've kind of hit and explored all the different facets of Bryce. Moving on with my career, I feel like we put it all out there and we didn't leave anything behind, which is comforting."

But the actor hasn't ruled out returning for flashback scenes, which is a big part of the show's make-up. Acknowledging that this could be a "possibility", he said: "I don't know in what capacity I'll be in season 4, or if I will be in it. I hope so. I'd love to keep working with these wonderful people."

"It would be an honour to come back," Justin added. "It would be great to do one more. But I guess we'll have to see!"

What about those guns?

One particularly ominous shot at the end of season 3 was the set of guns being dragged out of the water by a fishing boat. We thought that they'd been forgotten about, but these are presumably the very same ones that Tony and Clay had previously gotten rid of, to help hide Tyler's potential shooting at the end of season 2.

Deputy Standall now knows about what actually took place that night, as it was among the revelations that Ani spilled during her police interview. It seemed clear though, from that exchange, that he would not be pursuing Tyler.

Will that change now that there'll be physical evidence? It seems unlikely that the police department would be able to ignore a pile of weaponry that's been thrown into a river.

Not only could this be damaging for Tyler, who's come so far on the road of his recovery since the sexual assault he experienced last season, but it could also spell trouble for Clay.

Clay spent much of season 3 as the prime suspect in Bryce's murder and Tony always seemed one mistake away from getting into trouble with the law.

Will Ani return as the narrator for season 4?

13 Reasons Why Ani Monty

Introduced as a brand new character in season 3, it was always going to be a little tricky for Ani to break through and win viewers over.

She seems to have proven controversial so far, with fans of the show accusing her character of being fairly judgemental towards her fellow Liberty High students.

Having been absent for the first two seasons, Ani obviously wasn't around for the events that they're now dealing with and so it seems right to see her questioning them so much.

Anne Winters, who plays Chloe Rice on the Netflix show, has actually come to the character's defence.

In a recent interview with People, she said that she disagrees with the backlash towards Ani, arguing that the character is essential for the mystery surrounding Bryce's murder.

"I think her role was very important this season, because you know, you need someone that has the other side of Bryce," she said, "and we wouldn't have really gotten to see that unless there was some sort of new character that was living with him.

"That's vital to the story to see. And Ani is amazing. Grace, who plays Ani, is like the sweetest girl ever. I really loved her character this season."

Will the 13 Reasons Why creators switch things up with a new narrator for its final season? Either way, we'd expect Ani to return as she's now essential to the cover-up and knows almost everyone's secrets.

Will we ever find out what happened to Sheri?

Remember Sheri Holland? She was a key character in the first two seasons but now, she's nowhere to be seen.

Sheri was Hannah Baker's tape number five. Having run over a stop sign with Hannah in the passenger seat, Sheri (against Hannah's wishes) freaked out and ran away.

Tragically, it was this broken sign that inadvertently caused the accident and subsequent death of fellow student Jeff Atkins – something that Hannah felt tremendous guilt over.

After Clay heard that tape and found out what had happened, Sheri showed him that she had been trying hard to make amends by visiting the old man that had been caught up in the accident. The character spent time in juvenile prison, although it didn't play out on-screen.

In season 2, Sheri took on the role of trying to help her fellow students. She played an integral role in helping Justin Foley get clean, as well as working with Clay to uncover what had been going on in the clubhouse.

There's been no explanation as to why she's no longer part of the main cast's drama, so perhaps we'll get some answers – or even a return – in season 4.

What will happen for Tony and his family?

In a tragic twist of fate, it was revealed that Bryce's family were responsible for getting Tony's entire family detained and deported.

Discussing this storyline during an interview with Cosmo, actor Christian Navarro, who plays Tony, revealed how he felt filming it.

"What was incredible and saddening was watching this situation unfurl in real time at the border in the United States. From a very early point in the shooting schedule, I took it as a major responsibility to tell that story as genuinely and as unapologetically as possible, because I know there are young people who have gone through that situation, who are going through that situation, who I hope will find strength in Tony’s journey," he said.

It seems possible that this thread might continue, as it was actually planned to be hinted at in season 2 as well.

"At the end of the second season, there was a scene that was cut that alluded to Tony having issues with ICE and deportation and his parents," Navarro revealed. "It didn’t make the cut for the final show, but because of that, I had an idea that we would be traveling down that route for season 3."

Either way, it has understandably had a lasting impact on Tony. He was often the one that the Liberty High students would go to for help but, in the third season, he finally leaned on others for some support.

"I hope that Tony's able to fully embrace his new role as someone who can not only help others but also ask for help and be okay receiving help," Christian added.

13 Reasons Why season 1-3 are available now on Netflix.
