13 Reasons Why season 4 spoilers follow

Frequently controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why came to an end after four seasons last week, with an episode that saw the main characters graduate and begin the next stage of their lives, but not before one final heartbreak.

Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn), who had struggled with homelessness, heroin addiction and having to prostitute himself, was diagnosed in the final episode with HIV. That then progressed into AIDS, from which Justin died.

That plot point caused controversy among viewers, with some thinking it perpetuates false beliefs about the disease, arguing that there were plenty of other ways the character could have been killed off.

Also in the finale, Clay's mental state reached such a low point that he ran into the sheriff's office claiming he had a gun on him. He didn't, but he needed someone to notice how much pain he was in.

The show ended with Clay being gifted Hannah's tapes from the first season, which he buried.

Digital Spy asked our readers what they thought of the finale, and the majority of responses were positive, although it was close. Of more than 1,800 responses, 56% of people enjoyed the finale, while 44% thought that it was a letdown (at the time of writing).

Over the years, 13 Reasons Why has courted much controversy, but there are times when it has successfully tackled topics such as subverting overused and, frankly, homophobic tropes.
