Following Julia Roberts' departure from the psychological drama series Homecoming, Amazon Prime has now cast Janelle Monáe as her replacement for season 2.

Monáe is a multi-talented rapper, actress and producer who's even got her own day named after her in the city of Boston, plus, she's appeared in Hidden Figures and Moonlight as well as an episode of Sesame Street.

In short, director Sam Esmail's second season is in good hands.

According to TV Line, Monáe is set to play a "tenacious woman who finds herself floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is".

Homecoming season 2 will kick off production later this summer, so she's got plenty of time to practise her rowing skills.

Previously, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Esmail said of the next stage of the show: "We've deviated from the podcast, so [season two of] the podcast doesn't really have anything to do with the way the show is going. We're working on a second season, but we have a very different trajectory for our show.

"I think when I signed on, I had only listened to the first six episodes of the podcast, which is the first season, and then from there we deviated completely.

"The show starts out fairly close to the podcast, and in the back half of the season we really start to see the major shifts and differences from the podcast."

It's unknown as of yet whether the likes of season 1's Stephan James, Bobby Cannavale or Shea Whigham will return.

Homecoming season 2 is slated to debut on Amazon Prime in 2020.
