The return of the infamous Monterey Five is almost upon us, as HBO has released an official teaser trailer and the air date for the anticipated second season of Big Little Lies.
The award-winning series – adapted from the Liane Moriarty novel – will return to HBO in the US on June 9 and Sky Atlantic in the UK on June 10. The new trailer features Meryl Streep making her debut as Mary Louise Wright, the grieving mother of the late Perry (played by Alexander Skarsgard).
In the clip, Streep's character is determined to discover what happened to her son, and is seen asking Reese Witherspoon's character Madeline: "My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night... I'm very tempted to ask you, but I don't think I'd get the truth, would I?"
The trailer also sees Shailene Woodley's Jane telling Nicole Kidman's Celeste, Zoe Kravitz's Bonnie and Laura Dern's Renata that the group have been branded The Monterey Five, "as though we have a scarlet letter on our backs".
On what fans can expect from a season two, which has been shrouded in secrecy, HBO says: "The darkly comedic drama will continue to explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting.
"Multiple characters will be dealing with Perry's death, and the prospect of moving past a life-altering event. In short: things could get messy."
