American Gods star Ian McShane has questioned how much longer they can "draw out" the show, especially given the fact it is based on just one book.

The Starz show recently premiered its second season after a long delay, mired by behind-the-scenes drama and numerous showrunner changes.

The show will have a third season (with yet another showrunner change), though McShane, who plays Mr Wednesday, has questioned how much longer the show can run after that.

"I'm wondering how long they can draw out the book," McShane told TVLine. "Will it end with Season 3, or will there be a Season 4, before Shadow takes wing on his own?"

However, speaking of revelations to come in season 2, the actor teased: "Shadow has two revelations that happen with him which will have to be solved in Season 3."

Meanwhile, American Gods author Neil Gaiman recently opened up about the season 2 delay, insisting it wasn't because of behind the scenes drama.

"It took two years to get another season mostly because Starz wanted to wait and see what happened," he said.

"The two years bit has nothing to do with changing showrunners. It has to do with Starz looking at American Gods [and] going, 'This thing is weird. We don't know if people are going to like it or not. We think they will; we like it. But it's kind of not like anything else out there.'

"And waiting until, I think, Episode 2 was broadcast until they commissioned another [season]. From that point, that was where it started. So then you have to get scripts written. Then you start making another [season]."

American Gods airs on Starz in the US, with Amazon Prime Video airing the show a day later in the UK.
