American Gods star Ian McShane is the latest actor on the series to share his opinion on the exit of original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, arguing that their exit might have been a "good thing" for the show.

For a while there, it look liked the second season of the show was in a lot of trouble, especially when Fuller and Green's exit was soon followed by cast member Gillian Anderson announcing that she was also leaving the show, while the showrunner hired to replace Green and Fuller, Lost's Jesse Alexander, later left too.

But thankfully season two is now days away from premiering, and Ian McShane, who plays Mr Wednesday in the series, has shared his thoughts on the whole saga.

"In many ways, Bryan [Fuller] and Michael [Green] leaving might have been a good thing," he told Radio Times. "I’m just glad that we’re back on the f**king air. Yeah!

"If you enjoyed the first series, I think this is better, actually. Gets back to the book.

"I think the first series was provocative and visually exciting, and the stuff that Michael and Bryan added to it, but I think when I saw it eventually, I thought it just got a little too far away from the book."

The actor also reflected on some of season one's pacing issues, arguing that you "can't cheat an audience", and that there's only so much teasing shows should do.

"You can’t keep on doing [the storyline] 'coming to America', you have to shift the narrative forward," he said. "It’s complicated, you can’t give too much away otherwise you’ll give it all away.

"On the other hand, you can’t cheat an audience. You can’t keep just teasing them. You have to give them something."

Back in October fans got the first teaser trailer for the new season and in December the show released the first three minutes of the season two premiere.

These were both followed by the show's official trailer in January, which teased full-out war between the Old and New Gods.

American Gods returns on March 10 on Starz in the US, with Amazon Prime Video airing the show a day later on March 11 in the UK.
