Season 2 of American Gods is arriving very soon, and the first reviews for the Starz Neil Gaiman adaptation are in.
Back in October, Starz dropped the first teaser trailer for season 2 nearly two years after fans last saw the show, and last month the channel shared the first in-depth look at the new run by making the first three minutes of the season 2 premiere available to watch online too.
Now that the opener has been previewed in full for the first time, the critics have spoken – and it's not looking good.
"The overall vibe suggests a fantastic cast and talented visual artists trapped in a show with few interesting ideas. The main apocalyptic arc lacks emotional drive, with the most engaging moments going to the undead Laura Moon and the awkward courtship between Salim and the Jinn – side stories that didn't appear in the book. It's also hard to tell what American Gods is trying to say on a thematic level."
What to Read Next
"American Gods' second season is a pit of wasted potential... To be blunt: It's a miracle American Gods is a show that exists on television in 2019."
"American Gods began with so much promise. It had a glint in its eye, an admired book at its core, and storytellers brimming with excitement to share their vision. But all that potential petered out by the end of the first season, as even the original outline limped to a less-than-stunning finish. After all the work done to keep the show going – and the very real risk it might not keep going – one would hope for more onscreen urgency. Instead, it just continues on, as if nothing changed and nothing will."
"While the story picked up where it left off and didn’t venture much into the larger world, the second season might just be able to continue the story in a way that matches the first season's wildly imaginative, artful style of storytelling. But whether one should unquestioningly believe that'll be the case for the season as a whole remains to be seen."
American Gods returns on March 10 on Starz in the US, with Amazon Prime Video airing the show a day later on March 11 in the UK.
