Paul Hollywood's decision to move with The Great British Bake Off to Channel 4 hasn't been met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

But despite all the 'traitor' name-calling flying around, Jamie Oliver thinks it was the right shout for Paul.

"With Paul, he never had another thing," he told Digital Spy. "He has always been on the Bake Off. That's his thing. So I think if I was him I would have done the same thing.

"My opinion is different from everyone else's because I work in the industry. I don't think Love Productions were very happy. That's why they took it away. Channel 4 didn't go looking for it, it came to them and they were up with ITV.

"I think with the girls, they have their thing with the Beeb. They have other things. With Mary she is the matriarch, she is a legend, she is gorgeous and a more mature member of the team. I think her work/life balance having done seven years is her priority and she deserves that."

Jamie went on to say that the bottom line is, it's too pricey a show to get wrong.

"You have to ask yourself, is it the best it's ever been now? Is it the best year this year? As a C4 boy I think it costs too much to f**k up," he said. "Most of the people who work at C4 are ex-senior BBC so really? If you care about people and talent, there ain't no difference.

"I think they could get it wrong but I think it's an interesting time. Jay [Hunt] is super bright and has got her eyes fixed on what it's going to be. I don't know what they're going to do."

As for Jamie himself, he's taken his hat out of the ring to judge the all-new Bake Off.
