Britain’s Got Talent fans were left divided over an act which some described as “terrifying”.

The ITV reality show returned on Saturday with its 18th season, with the action set to follow more hopefuls who aim for a place at the Royal Variety Performance.

Following several auditions, which took place in Blackpool, the audience got a shock in the shape of Auzzy Blood, a silent individual who stunned the panel with a high-wire display of nail-biting theatrics involving hooks, nasal tubes and red liquid.

After a tense audition, in which the act enlisted the help of a squirming Simon Cowell, the audience groaned and screamed as they watched the contestant rappel themselves up a rope with a hook wedged in their mouth.

Despite the palpable tension and deafening silence upon the conclusion of the routine, Auzzy Blood made it through to the next round after securing three votes from the judges, with Amanda Holden describing the act as “horrifically brilliant”.

“It’s so outside of my taste – it was like watching another artform” added Bruno Tonioli, whilst Alesha Dixon remarked that she had “never seen anything like it” during her 13 years on the show.

Auzzy Blood drew a more varied response from viewers on social media, however, with one fan slamming the performance as they wrote on X: “Idk how anyone enjoyed this it was absolutely grotesque and unnecessary definitely not suitable for family entertainment.”

“Absolutely disgraceful there are children watching this,” wrote a second viewer, with a third echoing their sentiments as they remarked: “This is a family show time on ITV why are you putting this on prime time tv. Put me totally off watching the series now.”

“That act was disgusting and should not have been put on TV at prime time when children will be watching,” wrote a fourth viewer, with a fifth noting: “Thought you were a family-friendly show... that was horrendous.”

Auzzy Blood did have some supporters, however, with one viewer praising the originality of the routine as they wrote: “Wow that was brilliant but [sic] it was terrifying and very dangerous and risky guys to be honest.”

“Bloody fantastic act. Love stuff like this it’s a change from singers and dancers. Can’t wait to read the comments about how it shouldn’t be shown. I look forward to seeing what he does next,” added another entertained viewer.

Britain's Got Talent airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
