BBC Breakfast star Matt Taylor has explained the reason behind co-star Carol Kirkwood's recent absence.

Kirkwood, known for presenting the weather forecast on the BBC morning show, was notably absent from Monday's programme (July 15) with her colleague Taylor appearing instead.

Taylor confirmed he would be on screens for the foreseeable in a tweet, explaining Kirkwood's break.

"Good morning. We've sent @carolkirkwood off to see if she can persuade summer to pay us a longer visit," he tweeted on his X profile. "In the meantime, I'm looking after the @BBCBreakfast forecast this week and …oh look …more rain."

Taylor seemed to suggest Kirkwood is away on holiday this week, though the presenter didn't share any further details.

Kirkwood may be enjoying a break with her new husband Steve Randall, who she tied the knot with in December last year.

She recently opened up on her relationship with Randall, who popped the question back in May 2022. The BBC weather presenter is 14 years older than her husband and said (via the Express) this month that she's often asked about the age gap.

"If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it. I've had a few comments, but I don't care," she said.

"We've moved on from the days when he might have been described as my toy-boy or people might call me a cougar. We're happy together, and that's all that matters."

In a previous interview, Kirkwood said that the two were friends before things turned romantic. She and Randall began dating in 2021, going public with their relationship at the Radio Times Covers Party at Claridge's in London the following year.

She was previously married to Jimmy Kirkwood, but the two divorced in 2008.

BBC Breakfast airs 6am to 9am each morning on BBC One and BBC News 24.
