Gogglebox star Pete Sandiford has shared rare details about his relationship with wife Paige Yeomans, revealing that the couple's first date didn't exactly go according to plan.

As the new season of Gogglebox kicked off on Friday (February 18), Pete and his sister and co-star Sophie Sandiford settled back onto the sofa to share their thoughts on TV's latest offerings.

As they watched a romantic Valentine's edition of First Dates, Pete opened up to Sophie about his first date with Paige, joking that it became slightly hijacked by a stranger.

"It got quite awkward actually, our first date, when me and Paige went," he said. "We were in this bar in London and I bought this bloke a beer which, in London, people never seem to buy anyone else a drink.

"So he was like my best friend – he didn't leave us alone, so he was with us for the whole date!"

Thankfully, their first date not going according to plan didn't have a negative impact on the couple's relationship, as they got married in May 2021.

In November, he celebrated the couple's six month wedding anniversary by sharing a beautiful photo of the pair walking by the sea on their big day and calling Paige his "best mate, wife and the best mummy in the world".

2021 was a big year for Pete and Paige, as they also welcomed their first child together in September. Pete later confirmed that their baby son is named Jimmy.

Paige has never appeared on Gogglebox but Jimmy has made a couple of cameo appearances on the Sandiford sofa, much to fans' delight.

After welcoming Jimmy, Pete joked that his son is a "cool little lad" who "takes after his mum", adding that he has been struggling with the lack of sleep that comes with having a newborn.

"I've been up all night," he said at the 2021 National Television Awards. "I slept on the train here. [I've usually] got suitcases under my eyes, you just got me at a good time now."

Gogglebox airs on Channel 4.
