"I'd love to play him as an old man."

Discussing his Imitation Game co-star Keira Knightley, who he became friends with on the set on Atonement, Cumberbatch said: "Because we really are friends, we share this great shorthand.

"It made doing our scenes together a joy."

Cumberbatch also revealed that he has got to know Johnny Depp, saying: "We rolled cigarettes and sat around and talked and talked and talked. He's a friend now. Which is an amazing thing to think about."

Sherlock will return with a one-off special in 2015, with filming expected to begin in January.

Cumberbatch has been widely reported for the lead role in comic book movie Doctor Strange, but is yet to be officially confirmed by Marvel Studios and has remained coy over the subject.
