The Crystal Maze made a triumphant return for a new series tonight – but sadly the family taking part didn't get things off to a great start.

Host Richard Ayoade had the task of guiding Essex siblings the Hauxwells through the Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Future zones of the Maze.

They didn't get off to the best start when sole brother Ryan was locked away and they continued to suffer a series of setbacks – including getting synonyms totally mixed up with antonyms.

After using one crystal to save Ryan, things didn't look up for the Hauxwells. They went through challenge after challenge either without winning crystals, or winning them, then having to surrender them to rescue locked-in teammates.

The Maze Master made his best efforts to help, but viewers weren't at all impressed by the team's performance:

What to Read Next

The family ended up completing the maze with a grand total of zero crystals, with Ayoade refusing to even tell them about the prizes.

Although he did give them a chance to win some tokens by sending them into the Dome – sadly, they didn't manage to win any of those either, setting a brand new record.
