Riverdale star Lili Reinhart has revealed more about her character – just weeks before the mid-season premiere of the show is about to drop.

The actress plays Betty Cooper in the The CW/Netflix drama, and she recently opened up about the mental health issues that Betty will soon be facing.

Talking to Glamour about her character's latest plight, Reinhart said: "When Betty digs her nails into her hands, it's kind of when things are happening with her family.

"That's her trigger whether it be her mother, her brother or Polly. I think that's something to keep in mind."

Reinhart went on to explain about Betty's reunion with her brother Chic (played by singer Hart Denton).

"She's very curious to see if he has that darkness inside him as well. There might be some sister/brother bonding over mental health issues."

As well as Betty's relationship with her brother, it looks as if there will be tough times ahead for her friendship with Veronica.

"Not to give too much away, but I think there is definitely challenges to come in Betty and Veronica's friendship, and it's a result of their parents," Lili said.

"How do they navigate their friendship with the parents that they have? And if their parents are at war, does that mean the kids are at war? That becomes very heavy in the latter half. The concept of Betty and Veronica putting each other first does become challenged."

It also appears that will be more surprises in store for fans as the season two continues – as the creators of the show teased earlier in the year that it will 'return to basics'.

Riverdale continues on Netflix on January 17, 2018.
