The first trailer for Victoria's Christmas special uses the festive carol 'Silent Night' as its backdrop, but there's no heavenly peace in the palace this holiday season.

ITV's period drama looks as lavish and expensive as ever, but there's a cloud of menace hanging over the royal family in quick shots of everyone looking miserable intercut with the usual seasonal merriment. Watch the trailer below:

Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman) is on the verge of seeing one of her loved ones drown at one point, whereas Lord Alfred (Jordan Waller) is still understandably down in the dumps over the shock death his lover Edward Drummond (Leo Suter).

However, there may be light at the end of the tunnel! Jordan Waller recently expressed his hope that there will be happier times ahead for Lord Alfred in next month's Christmas special.

"Although Lord Alfred will never be able to forget Drummond – and this will be explored in the Christmas special and perhaps beyond into a third season, the fact is that he has to come to terms with accepting a form of happiness." Jordan told Digital Spy.

"But I can't say in what form that comes."

Will that that newfound "form of happiness" lead to the prince ending up with Wilhelmina (Bebe Cave)? After all, it has already been revealed that Victoria's Christmas special will feature a proposal.

Victoria will be airing on ITV on Christmas Day (December 25). PBS will be airing Victoria's second series and the Christmas special in 2018 in the US.
