Victoria fans were left inconsolable following the shock death of civil servant Edward Drummond (Leo Suter) in the brutal series finale last night (October 15).
Drummond heroically took a bullet for Prime Minster Robert Peel, leaving love interest Lord Alfred (Jordan Waller) shell-shocked and bereaved.
But it's how he handles his heartbreak that will be explored in the Christmas special, and perhaps in a third series of the ITV period drama.
"I don't know what series three will look like, but there's a lot of narrative richness to it as to what happens to Lord Alfred next as he's so heartbroken," Suter told Digital Spy.
"Maybe some of this will develop in the Christmas special. He could end up with Wilhelmina. She handled [Drummond and Alfred's kiss] quite delicately.
"Her feelings for Lord Alfred are brewing and she's feeling very conflicted."

Drummond's death obviously means he won't feature in the Christmas special, but Suter admitted he was still on the cast's WhatsApp group, and even caught a glimpse of the set after its festive make-over when he went to say goodbye to the cast and crew.
"I can say there's lots of ice-skating, impressive Christmas trees, and huge pieces of meat," he continued. "Albert invented our Christmas, so he gets all in a tizz about it."
Suter also revealed that Drummond's death was initially set to come much earlier on in the series, and that showrunners only ended up extending his storyline with Alfred's Waller because of how beautifully it was playing out.
"When I got the part I was told I was going to die earlier in the series – in episode five or six but they extended it out," Suter disclosed.
"They [the writers, producers] realised there was something very nice and very touching between Drummond and Lord Alfred. When we were filming it we got the sense that there was something big going on. So that got inflated, which was a bonus for me."
Victoria's Christmas special airs on ITV in December.
