Suranne Jones has revealed that a third series of Doctor Foster could happen.

The actress plays Gemma Foster in the BBC drama, which returned for a second series earlier this month and is proving to be just as – if not more – brutal than the first.

And while Suranne concedes that the current run has a "really good, solid ending", she did reveal that she may be up for reprising the role if showrunner Mike Bartlett has a good idea.

"If Mike comes up with another story then we'll talk about it," Suranne told The Mirror.

"But for now, like the first one, it's got a really good, solid ending."

What to Read Next

As well as more affairs and devastating revelations, the second series of Doctor Foster has brought the term 'hate sex' back into the public sphere once more, for which we are forever grateful.

Viewers also got some indication of how the series could expand in last week's episode, as it came to light that Gemma and Simon's son Tom (Tom Taylor) had attempted to force himself on girlfriend Isobel and fled town with his mum to make home somewhere else.

But what does Suranne want viewers to learn from the show – if this really is the finale?

"Hopefully it will make people think twice about divorce or having an affair in the first place," she added.

"I certainly hope it makes people think about how they conduct themselves, if they do split with somebody.

"Ultimately, I just hope viewers enjoyed the ride of watching two people who really f**king hate each other having to breathe the same air."

Yep. Love it.

Doctor Foster continues tomorrow (September 26) at 9pm on BBC One.
