ITV has announced a new crime drama from the producers of Doctor Foster.

Titled Saviour, the upcoming series will explore the criminal justice system through the lives of Ben, a well-brought up medical student, and criminal barrister Indy, whose paths collide after a life-changing incident.

Viewers will first be introduced to Ben, who goes to a fancy dress party in a police uniform, hoping to impress his crush Xenia.

However, when Ben sees Xenia being attacked by a man on his way home, he has no choice but to intervene when he is urged on by a bystander innocently assuming he's a real police officer.

When Ben is the only one to make it out alive after chasing the man into a tunnel with an on-coming train, he desperately calls his dad Eddie, "a long serving and well-respected" police officer whose uniform Ben borrowed for the party.

The official synopsis continues: "When she meets a terrified Ben in a police cell, facing a charge of murder, she will have to navigate a world of police corruption, fervent press interest and a defendant who is keeping secrets from her.

"She will fight tooth and nail for the truth, but Indy has secrets of her own. Deeply personal secrets that are finally coming to the surface and threatening to tear the case and her family apart.

"Throughout the drama we are left asking the question – how far are you prepared to go to protect the ones you love?"

Saviour is created by writer and full-time criminal barrister Imran Mahmood, with Doctor Foster producers Drama Republic onboard to co-produce the project with Parti Productions.

Further details, including who will star in the series and when it will air, will be announced in due course.

"I am thrilled to be bringing to screen my first scripted TV series for ITV and Parti Productions," said Mahmood.

"I’ve always wanted to use my experience as a criminal barrister to explore the real criminal justice system at work - both its strengths and its failings and there is no better medium than the screen to explore it."

Saviour will air on ITV1 and STV and be available for streaming on ITVX and STV Player.
