Enjoy the shirtless glory of Aidan Turner in Poldark while you can because the period drama's days might be numbered.

The BBC One series has been sending pulses racing over the last three years, but even the randiest of love stories have to end — and for Turner, that seems to be with a fifth series.

"I think we run out of things to do after series five. I think that would be our last one," he told WWD. "Four was green-lit, five hasn't been yet, and it wouldn't be fair of me to green light it, but it's probably looking like it may happen."

Digital Spy broke the news earlier this year that the BBC had re-upped with Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield for a fourth series, but the show's future beyond that point remains in question.

"At the moment, obviously, we're working on series four, and then if series five goes ahead," Horsfield told us. "We'll have to consider what will be in that series five."

There is plenty of material left to draw on, considering that Winston Graham's Poldark book series encompasses a whopping 12 volumes.

For now, Turner seems to be enjoying whipping off his shirt at the drop of a hat to sweep the Cornish beauties off their feet.

"[Poldark is] certainly interesting to play, and he constantly surprises me," the actor told WWD. "I get the odd e-mail from Debbie saying, 'I've written the last scene for this, can you believe this is what he does?' But that's what I love about it.

"He's real, he's not just a benevolent saint or a do-gooder, he tries to help as much as he can, he's a good person by nature, but he's also severely flawed.

"He's got an ego — although he doesn't think that he does. He's not great at delegating work; he wants to take on all responsibilities, which is a noble thing to do. He wants to be the man of the house, the guardian of the community, but at the same time, he lets a lot slide and gets a lot of people into trouble.

"He's a tricky guy; I don't think he knows where he's at sometimes, which is interesting to play. He's a gambler by nature, and there's a lawlessness to him that's not always attractive, it's irresponsible and dangerous. Getting into his psychology is fascinating, and I still can't figure this guy out three years in. He's the gift that keeps on giving."

Poldark airs its third series finale from 9pm on BBC One on Sunday (August 6).
