We've already heard some pretty impressive stuff about series four of Sherlock, which will finally be back on TVs on New Year's Day.

But now the new trailer has just been released and it's given us an even better understanding of what to expect from the new series when all of our favourite (and some not-so-favourite) characters return.

The 47-second clip opens with Mark Gatiss' Mycroft Holmes saying: "The roads we walk have demons beneath and yours have been waiting for a very long time".

That, plus those shots of a burning building, means that this series looks darker than ever before.

We also get a glimpse at Toby Jones, who looks marvellously evil as he says: "What's the very worst thing you can do to your very best friends? Tell them your darkest secret."

This is followed by Sherlock saying "I love you", BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHO TO. Oh, and in one bit he's holding a gun and looking desperate. Can January 1 get here sooner please?

One noticeable absence was Moriarty, and we're still not entirely sure if he's even in the new series in some form or another. But then again, they're not likely to give that away in the trailer now are they?

The gloomy trailer seems in line with what we already know about the next, and apparently "brutal" series, with Mark Gatiss telling the Radio Times yesterday: "We always have to keep reiterating this hasn't suddenly become some kind of über bleak sort of Scandi show."

Sherlock series four will kick off on New Year's Day with 'The Six Thatchers' at 8.30pm on BBC One.
