We all closed our eyes in silent embarrassment when John Lynch's Jim Burns attempted to rekindle his romance with Gillian Anderson's DI Stella Gibson on the last series of The Fall.
John returns as the tormented, softly-spoken and sensitive assistant chief constable in the third series of the critically-acclaimed drama, and has spoken about just why his character can't get over his past with his sort-of rival.
"It's a tremendous obsession," John told the Radio Times. "He obviously can't get over what happened between them, but she also infuriates him and there's envy there too - he knows he's not the police officer she is, yet he's still fighting fires for Stella."
The Northern Irish actor and novelist also hinted at Jim's alcohol-induced downfall, continuing: "He's drinking again and has ongoing issues with that.
"Jim's a complicated character, but then they're all complicated characters in this drama. In essence, The Fall is about things coming apart at the seams - what makes people tick, what makes them dysfunctional."
Digital Spy also spoke to the show's creator Allan Cubitt about speculation surrounding the series' future.
What to Read Next
"I don't think I'm giving much away in saying it's Jamie [Dornan's] last season," he said. "But that's not to say that we wouldn't do more of The Fall.
"I do have some thoughts [about a series beyond the upcoming third], but I'm quite keen on doing other things as well, so it's not going to be straight away."
The Fall series 3 returns on Thursday, September 29.
