Tom Hiddleston is set to star as a detective in National Geographic's investigation into the final hours of Pompeii. The series, which will stream on Disney+ from 23 July, sees the actor reunite with Loki executive producer Kevin R Wright.
Produced by Plimsoll Productions, Pompeii: Out of Time will see The Night Manager star appear as a time-travelling detective, piecing together what happened in the lead-up to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The three-part series has been described as "a fusion of cinematic scripted drama and investigative documentary storytelling" that will "transport audiences to ancient Rome in the hours before and during" the fateful event.

As per the logline, Hiddleston "uncovers remarkable evidence — and the stories of real people that challenge long-held assumptions about Pompeii and its final hours — not least revealing that many of those caught up in the disaster had the chance to survive".
On Hiddleston's role, it continued: "Following a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman and a mysterious Praetorian Guard, he pieces together how each confronted impossible choices as disaster loomed.

The Marvel icon said it was "a privilege to host this visually immersive and dynamic series", before sharing: "The ancient world has compelled my imagination and curiosity for as long as I can remember: I've been fascinated by it all my life."

Tom McDonald, EVP of Content at National Geographic, explained how the company would be "bringing the past to life", namely through "ground-breaking discoveries, exploration and world-class storytelling".
Pompeii: Out of Time will be available on Disney+ and National Geographic on 23 July.
