Sweetie darlings, good news. Absolutely Fabulous is on BBC iPlayer to add some magic to your Christmas - right from series 1 - and it is still utterly fantastic. A reminder of the early nineties, a stroll down memory lane. A comedy based on two friends who spent more time drunk than sober, wearing the latest fashions, whether they suited or not, that became an instant smash hit. As Eddie often shouted as she donned some hideously bright ensemble: "It's Lacroix, darling. Lacroix!"
There were so many brilliant lines in this. If you are feeling down, we prescribe two episodes a night.
A lot of the jokes are based around drinking.
"What shall you do if you give up drinking?" asked the plummy Miss Lumley, as fashion editor Patsy Stone.
"Water, it's a mixer, Pats. We have it with whiskey," replied a serious-faced Jennifer as PR Edina Monsoon, reportedly based on the famous real-life Lynne Franks.
"What are you drinking, Pats?" "This? Chanel No. 5." was another one.
What to Read Next
Priceless.
And we can't forget the deadpan Saffy, played by Julia Sawalha, Edina's daughter in a classic child/parent role reversal ("Mum. You have been getting ready for three hours and you still look like a bloated citrus fruit."), as well as her cutting digs at Patsy ("She's emaciated, like her brain.").
The irreverent humour is classic gold. Asked last month about the possibility of a comeback, Jennifer Saunders seemed to say no as she replied to The Times: "We're quite old. I'm 67. she 79. It takes a lot of energy to do something like that."
So go on, say cheers to a jolly good laugh!
And maybe, if you love this duo as much as us, tune in to Amandaland on 23 December, a one-off special where a family gather for Christmas at Aunt Joan's, played by Jennifer. Amanda is played by Motherland's Lucy Punch and Felicity by Joanna.
"It's just really well-written. Proper character jokes and funny performances... I think it's just terrific. I love it!" Jennifer added. Can't wait!
