Jamie Dornan has defended the second series of The Fall.

The second run of BBC Two's crime drama was met with some criticism for expanding its format beyond the search for serial killer Paul Spector (Dornan).

Dornan has now insisted that The Fall needed a dramatic reinvention for it to continue beyond a single series.

"The thing is, the show had to develop and expand. You can't just regurgitate what you did in the first series," he told The Guardian.

"Some people's argument is that you should stop after the first series."

Dornan is confirmed to return for a third outing of The Fall with Gillian Anderson, which he hinted might not be the end of the show.

"I would happily play Paul for ever and one thing I'm learning is: 'Ah, f**k it, you can't please everyone'," he declared.

Dornan's commitment to series three of The Fall will not interfere with his return for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel.
