The Split writer Abi Morgan has weighed in on the possibility of there being a crossover in spin-off show The Split Up.

The original legal drama returned to screens this Christmas with two new episodes titled The Split: Barcelona, seeing the Defoe family travel to Spain for a special wedding.

In February, it was revealed that The Split universe was expanding, with the BBC having greenlit a new series titled The Split Up, following a new family of legal experts called the Kishans.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, creator and writer Morgan addressed whether fans could see some of The Split cast popping up in the future spin-off show.

"Yeah, I think we’re talking about that," she told us. "I think it will be a show that will very much stand on its own but invariably it’s lovely to have built that audience and we’re excited to see that audience hopefully come to the new version of the show. Who knows."

In September, it was reported that production on The Split Up had "halted indefinitely", with a source telling Deadline at the time that the decision was due to "editorial reasons".

While based on The Split, Morgan is not writing the new series with playwright and screenwriter Ursula Rani Sarma instead taking the reigns.

Nevertheless, in our chat with Morgan, who still has some involvement in the new series, she confirmed that the series is still moving forward.

"We're working on it, we're developing it, we're really excited about the team led by Ursula and we're really hoping we'll be going into production next year," she told Digital Spy.

"It's been a really lovely thing to evolve this into a new family, a new location with a whole new group of writers."

The Split Up will instead take place in Manchester at a prestigious British-Asian family law firm called Kishan Law.

"They are the 'go to firm' for Manchester’s elite, who come to them for their excellence, integrity, and discretion," the official synopsis states. "But the future and legacy of Kishan Law hangs in the balance when a family secret from the past comes to light, throwing their professional and personal lives into turmoil."

The Split: Barcelona and all three seasons of The Split are available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
