Derry Girls is sadly coming to an end very soon – and last night, viewers were taken on a trip back to the 1970s.

This week's flashback episode focused on Ma Mary (Tara Lynne O'Neill) and Aunt Sarah (Kathy Kiera Clarke), taking us back to their high school days.

With show creator Lisa McGee previously refusing to rule out a one-off special in the future (or even a movie), Tara Lynne O'Neill has spoken about how'd she'd feel donning one of Ma Mary's iconic jumpers again.

"Well she needs to hurry up because I’ll be on a zimmer frame by then! I'd prefer her to write it over the weekend," Tara Lynne joked.

"No, I would do anything for Lisa because at the end of the day, she gave me this great opportunity and it has changed my life," she continued. "It hasn't changed my work life but it's changed my personal life."

Elaborating on how her life has changed since Derry Girls' success, Tara Lynne added: "It's helped my confidence, and it's helped financially obviously. It's made me braver.

"I've started writing now and I have a play on the BBC iPlayer called Rough Girls as part of their Lights Up series. I wouldn't have done that had I not been around for the girls.

"That fearlessness, you can feed off that. So if Lisa wants to write me a part I'll be there, even if I am on a zimmer frame."

Meanwhile, Lisa recently opened up to Digital Spy about creating the special Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah episode, revealing she'd always planned an episode about the two sisters, and the occasion of the final series provided an opportunity to do it.

"The third season, it's my last chance, I have to do it now. So that was the first episode of this series I pitched to Channel 4," Lisa said.

"It's risky because it's very different, and it's not the show's formula, but they just went 'Yeah, go for it' because they're Channel 4 and they're incredible and taking risks is the thing they're known for."

Derry Girls airs on Tuesday nights at 9pm on Channel 4, and is available to stream on All 4.
